In 2003 I was ‘a keeper for a day’ at the Paradise Wildlife Park. Helen had bought me a Red Letter Day, although from talking to the keepers it seems that this experience is more usually enjoyed by children!

I was able to get hands-on with some of the animals, including the adorable meerkats.

The keepers were very friendly. Brian was the senior keeper and I started off by helping him muck-out the ostrich house. The ostriches were quite vicious, so it behoved one to be careful. Sally, Claire and Rob were the other keepers on the day. It was late in the year so there were not many visitors in the Park, and I arrived early before it opened.

Unfortunately they did not have any big cat cubs when I was there. They had had tiger cubs in the past and it would have been nice to have played with them. There were, however, the fully grown variety.

I was also allowed to feed a black lemur and there were of course many other animals, all of which ultimately contributed to the Zoo Poo skip

I must say I enjoyed my keeper role far better than my normal work.
